when i was still in school, i found a website called gif cities, funded by the internet archive, that provided people with old internet gifs to download freely to use for whatever. since i thought most of them were charming and silly, i used them in my school slideshows and any other projects i could think of. sometimes, i could accidentally left click on the gifs, instead of saving them, which would send me to the websites they were from through the internet archive, and i was always surprised by a cute little personal website someone used to own, but would get a sense of eeriness from it, even with the primitive web design, often cute and silly looking. sometimes i would try to find what the websites looked like in the modern day, and while most of them would be shut down (unfortunately), others would still be up in their primitive states, seemingly abandoned by their owners, usually neocities websites from between 1999-2005. usually the websites weren't creepy or weird like any of these shown in the video, but knowing how many websites are left on the internet being left to collect dust just feels off to me. we go on websites like twitter and youtube every day, but how many people are going on websites like these? how are some of these websites being kept up after so long? it's kind of weird to think about.
